Ginger Harvest And Seed

pubdate:2024-03-08   click:

Ginger is not hardy and is usually harvested before the arrival of the first frost in mid to late October. After harvest, cut off the ground stems from the base of the stems (reserve 2 cm-3 cm of stubble) without drying.

Harvest

The harvesting of ginger is different from other vegetables. It can be divided into three methods: tender ginger harvesting, old ginger harvesting and planting ginger harvesting:

⑴ Tender ginger is harvested, which can be used as fresh vegetables for early supply to the market. Harvesting usually starts in early August. The early-harvested ginger has tender meat, light spicy taste, high water content, and cannot be stored. It is suitable for pickling pickles or making spiced pepper seasoning. It has a delicious taste and is extremely popular in the market and has good economic benefits.

⑵ Ginger harvesting is generally carried out from mid-to-late October to November. Harvest the ginger when the above-ground plants begin to wither and the rhizomes are fully expanded and mature. At this time, the harvested ginger pieces have high yield, strong spicy taste, and can be stored and transported. They are of good quality as seasoning or processing dried ginger slices. But harvesting must be completed before frost to prevent frost and rot. The harvest should be done on a sunny day, and the plants should be cut cleanly, and then ginger pieces should be excavated to minimize damage.

(3) The harvest of ginger is generally carried out in mid-to-late June when the above-ground plant has 4-5 leaves. When harvesting, carefully remove the soil from the rhizosphere of the plant, take out the ginger, and cover the roots with soil. If the harvest is too late, the root damage will affect plant growth.

Seed

For ginger pieces for seeding, it is best to set up another seeding field for cultivation, and apply more potassium fertilizer (vegetable ash, etc.) and less nitrogen fertilizer (such as urea) during the growth period. When harvesting, it is aired for several days, and the moisture of the seeds is reduced for storage. It is also possible to select ginger pieces with robust plants, full ginger pieces, free from pests and diseases, and undamaged in field production, and then store them for seeding after drying.
